A database contains important information and securing it is a primary concern. Since Microsoft Access is the most used program when it comes to database, it is possible that people have tried its security and some may have found their way through it. However, there are still many ways how you can secure your database.
One way is to use the methods offered by Microsoft Access itself, which is the password protection and user-level security. Database password is the simplest way to keep casual browsers out. Depending on the data stored on the database, this security option may be all that you need. But keep in mind that there are free utilities available in the Internet that will crack the password in seconds so it is not advisable if you have sensitive data in your database. Meanwhile, the user-level security enables you to require a user name and password. This method is based on a workgroup file which stores the member's user name, password and information. Using this method, you can assign rights to parts of the database to individuals. Again, while this method is better than the previous one, it is still not an end-all solution since there are inexpensive utilities available that can overcome the encryption used on the file.
But don't lose hope since there are software products that offer to add a layer of security to your database. Although expensive and requires a lot of work, in the end, it will still be worth it.
